Fort William Mountain Festival

17th February 2024

The Fort William Mountain Festival is on at the moment with lots of events on, both indoor and outdoor. It was nice to meet the ‘Drawing the Mountains’ workshop this morning. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service have a stand at the Festival Hub in the Nevis Centre so if you want to speak to a forecaster about current conditions or avalanches in general then come along and say hello either before or at the interval of the main evening events.

I headed into Coire na Ciste on Ben Nevis today and some pictures showing conditions are below. The snowpack is continuing to thaw and consolidate and stability is good. Current hazards include any remaining cornices collapsing and falling ice and rock in the mild conditions.

A sketch by Jenny from this morning’s ‘Drawing the Mountains’ workshop.

The Castle area.

Only patchy snow remaining around the CIC hut.

No. 3 Gully area.

Debris from earlier in the week reached the floor of Coire na Ciste.

Plenty of snow around an unfrozen lochan in Coire na Ciste.

Nice pics, especially of the CIC hut but don’t think mutch of the sketch.
