A warm start to winter

14th December 2023

Well today was the “official” start to the avalanche season, despite the cold temperatures we have had for the past couple of weeks!
And it was a bit disappointing, although the conditions did feel real!
Last night the freezing level rose above the summits briefly, before lowering to around 1100m, so the recent existing snow cover did thaw and consolidate a bit.

Tomorrow the freezing level is expected to rise significantly with summit temperatures reaching 4 or 5 degrees, so defiantly not that wintery! What little snow there is will further thaw and disappear in all but isolated locations.
We have decided not to issue a proper avalanche report as there is little hazard to speak of. We will be doing daily blog posts with general mountain shots so you can keep abreast of conditions.

It his expected to remain warm until early next week, and when the snow does arrive, we will start forecasting
