Fresh snow and sunshine

18th February 2023

After overnight snow it was a beautiful sunny morning with light winds. Cloudier but dry in the afternoon. It was great to see plenty people out climbing, walking and ski touring.

A brief warming towards the end of the snowfall when the freezing level rose above 1200 metres triggered several avalanches. I observed debris from 3 on East and North-East aspects. As the temperature dropped again the wet surface refroze to give a widespread breakable crust. The older snowpack has become very firm in the colder temperatures.

Carn Mor Dearg with Ben Nevis behind.

Great to see some white hills again.

Coire an Lochan looking South.

Some fresh snow but crags still looking pretty black.

Easy Gully

Coire an Lochan. Climbers on Left Twin.

Corrie Dubh

Looking down to Braveheart chair. Plenty of snow on this North-East aspect.

A small crown wall in Corrie Dubh.

Avalanche debris in Coire Dubh.

Debris from 2 overnight avalanches in Coire an Lochan. These would have happened during brief temperature spike.
