Breakable crust

8th January 2022

The freezing level briefly rose to around 1100 metres this morning before dropping again. This has resulted in a breakable crust and has helped to consolidate the snowpack although weaknesses still persist at depth particularly in softer layers. Some fresh snow fell in showers during the day with wind redistribution at higher elevations.

Plenty of snow but a rather grey day.

Windy with drifting snow at 1200 metres on Aonach Mor.

Aonach Mor was popular with ski tourers today. Tricky skiing conditions with a widespread breakable crust.
