The end of the winter?

7th May 2016

It was a cloudy day with a few spots of rain. The cloud stayed above the summits so visibility was reasonable. Soft wet snow gave good skiing as the lack of sun meant that it didn’t get too soft.

The forecast for the next few days is for very warm dry weather. The snowpack will be generally stable but localised wet snow surface instabilities will be present on very steep slopes, particularly those exposed to the sun. Cornice collapse and rock fall will also be likely.

Good cover on a North aspect with more patchy cover on an East aspect at 1000 metres.

Good cover on a North aspect with more patchy cover on an North-West aspect at 1000 metres.

Snow slumped into the burn showing layers in the older snowpack.
