Avalanche Day!

11th February 2018

Snow fell down to sea level overnight which caused a few issues with the roads the this morning. It also deposited a fair amount of unstable windslab onto lee aspects. Visibility was not that great (against the pictures below are about as good it got)  but despite this plenty of size 1 and small size 2 avalanches were observed. Cornices were also prone to collapse.

Fresh Avalanche debris in Coire Dubh. This was triggered early this morning by Nevis Range Ski Patrol using explosives for avalanche mitigation purposes.

Pieces of cornice over 200 metres down the hillside from where they started.

A number of small natural releases at around 1000 metres.

There were a few heavy showers during the afternoon. These fell as snow down to carpark level.
