Sunshine and Showers

28th March 2026

It was a windy day with periods of  pleasant sunshine and plenty of heavy snow showers. It was pretty hard going on foot due to a combination of soft fresh snow on top of a breakable crust. Evidence of a recent avalanche was noted on the Cairn Slope. Although not big, it shows the fresh snow is not well bonded. I could not see what was happening in the higher coires, but there will have been areas of unstable windslab being deposited and fragile cornices building. Looks like a wild day tomorrow before the weather settled down a bit on Monday.

Some pleasant sunshine during a break between showers. Looking towards the Grey Coires.

During the snow showers it was pretty wild with strong winds and poor visibility. The transition between the pleasant conditions shown in the previous image, and those shown in this image was rapid.

Plenty of soft fresh snow in the vicinity of G and T gully.

Looking up to a small avalanche on the Cairn Slope.

Looking into Coire Dubh just before the next showers arrives.

Looking over to Stob Coire an Laoigh. Most of the slopes visible in this photo are on windward aspects, so are holding less snow than slopes at the same altitude on lee aspects.
