The slow thaw continues

21st March 2026

It was another day with the freezing level above the summits. Winds were light but it was cloudier than the last few days. The cloud meant that the snowpack didn’t refreeze last night although it was slightly firmer first thing this morning than later in the day.

Cornices remain a concern in places. Many of these have slumped in the recent mild conditions leaving a crack between the cornice and the remaining snowpack. While most of these cornices are sitting on snow below and seem reasonably stable, collapse cannot be ruled out.

The photos below were taken in the clearer times on Aonach Mor and much of the day was cloudier.

A large crack in the snow above Easy Gully. This snow is most likely to continue to slowly slump rather than suddenly collapse.
