Clear Morning, Mild and Damp Afternoon
21st February 2026
A pleasant morning was followed by a wet afternoon. The clear conditions in the morning allowed a few photos for Coire an Lochan on Aonach Mor before the cloud rolled in. Ben Nevis seemed to be in the cloud from early morning, so less view there. Debris was observed from a number of avalanches that occurred yesterday, many of which were cornice triggered. However, there were still plenty of cornices remaining this morning. Given that this afternoon has been mild and damp, I suspect a few more may have gone. Some slightly colder conditions tomorrow show firm things up at higher levels before the next mild and wet spell which is expected Monday night/Tuesday.
The view over to Carn Mor Dearg. Under clear conditions you would be able to see Ben Nevis behind, but today it was in the cloud from early morning.
A cornice triggered slab avalanche centre shot. This probably released yesterday (Friday) in the mild and wet conditions. Still plenty of sections of cornice remaining, these will currently be unstable in the mild and wet conditions.
A few photos from Ben Nevis which was in the cloud from early morning so not such good views, but gives an idea of how things are looking there. The view into Coire an Ciste. There was some debris from yesterday below some of the major gullies.
Looking up the hill from the CIC hut. Douglas Boulder looking quite black on the right, otherwise the crags still holding a bit of snow and ice.
A zoomed in view during a slight clearing. the minus face on the left, Orion face and Observatory buttress in the centre, and Douglas boulder on the right.
