Failed to Find the Windslab Today.
7th February 2026
Having found some windslab on Aonach Mor yesterday, I was surprised to fail to find any meaningful deposits of windslab on Ben Nevis today. I headed up to Coire Leis, which is roughly the same altitude and aspect as to where I had dug my pit yesterday. Despite a fair bit of searching, I found very little. Perhaps the snow showers that deposited the snow that I found yesterday missed Ben Nevis.
It was turning milder through the day with the freezing level around 900 metres during the morning, creeping slightly up the hill during the afternoon. Below this level the previously hard snowpack was starting to soften slightly. Any slab that does remain will be starting to consolidate. With the freezing level creeping up to 1200 metres overnight, this process is expected to continue tomorrow.
Good to see lots of teams out and about today.
