Strong South-Easterlies on Ben Nevis
26th January 2026
Another day of Strong South-Easterlies. It was a bit colder than yesterday, and the snowpack between about 600 metres and 800 metres, which was quite damp yesterday, has frozen solid.
The view to Ben Nevis on my way up the hill this morning. When there is a strong South-Easterly wind it is quite common for the cloud to hang around the hills all day while away from the hills it is clear.
Early afternoon and there had been very little change; poor visibility over the summit but reasonably clear away from the higher hills. This has been the theme for a few days now. Sounds like tomorrow will be different, poor visibility expected everywhere.
Douglas Boulder on the right with the North-East Buttress and Observatory Ridge disappearing up into the cloud behind.
A few teams climbing on the on the West side of the Douglas boulder. A decent choice to try and get at least a little shelter from the strong South Easterly winds.
Looking back at the CIC hut on the way down the hill. The wind seemed to get up around the middle of the day. There was a fair bit of snow blowing around although not much seemed to be sticking anywhere.
