Rain turning to snow

22nd January 2026

Not the nicest of days on Ben Nevis today. Rain to high levels overnight gradually turned to snow today. This was combined with South-South-Easterly gales and poor visibility. Everyone that I saw this morning was retreating from the mountain.

It was mild last night with the temperature dropping again today which should be good for consolidation  of the snowpack and hopefully improve the climbing conditions. There’s been a bit of snow loss overnight at lower elevations but I suspect that any loss higher up will have been replaced by fresh snow today. Photos below showing what could be seen of the North Face of Ben Nevis.
