Briefly clear
5th December 2025
The temperature at the summit hut on Aonach Mor. The past 24 hours it has generally been between about minus one and minus two. However, for a few hours this morning the skies cleared allowing the temperature to drop to minus four.
Looking up the Goose ski run. Not much snow below about 950 metres, but looking reasonably white above that.
The main snowpack is found above about 950 metres, below this level there is only really a dusting which will be gone in a few hours when it turns mild. However, above this level, and particularly on the tops it felt very wintry. It was briefly clear during the morning, which allowed the temperature to drop. This meant there was a slight crust on the snowpack, but during the day the freezing level rose back to around 900 or 1000 metres. After a few brief clear spells as I was walking in, the cloud came in mid morning and visibility dropped, so not the finest day for photos. Looks similarly cloudy if a bit milder tomorrow.
Good cover on the summit run during a brighter spell this morning. This was about as good as visibility got while I was up there.
A post well rimed up at the top of the crags. Looks like the wind had been blowing onto the crags (hence the rime on the left of the post) and they looked covered in a thick layer of icy rime.
Cornices, there are a few small cornices about such as here at the top of Easy Gully. Visibility was very poor by this point.
The view from the top of Easy Gully. It looked like the inside of a ping pong ball, but it think it gives an idea of what visibility was like.
