The Warm Weather is Definitely Here Now

13th January 2025

Mild temperature, strong winds and rain at all levels today. During the recent cold spell the hills had looked white, but it had been quite a thin dusting of soft powdery snow. A few hours of rain and mild temperatures and a lot of this superficial covering had gone, leaving the hills looking very black with just some patches about. With the mild conditions continuing for the next few days, things are only going to get worse.

Aonach Mor Summit Temperature over the past 5 days. It has gone from well below freezing to well above, and unfortunately looks like remaining that way for a good few days yet.

Gray and damp looking over to Tom na Sroine.

Damp.

A small patch of snow was found to dig into. Although not really required to write today’s avalanche report, staying in tune with snow processes is useful. For example, here some facets from the recent cold weather were still present today (but unlikely to be there tomorrow).

Looking up the Carin Slope. Snow cover is distinctly patchy.
