Windy!

16th February 2025

Unfortunately the wind made observations difficult today and it was not possible to see what was happening higher on the mountain.

Generally, there is a real lack of snow with minimal build up to survive any sustained thaw period. Drifting snow was observed above 600 metres which of course highlights the source of the windslab problem, which at the moment is isolated and mostly confined to gully features and wind sheltered locations (see report for more detail).

(Above) The obligatory cracking snow photograph showing multiple weaknesses in the isolated deposits of windslab which have been mostly captured by the snow fences.

(Above) Snow cover looking down the Goose ski run on Aonach Mor at approx 850 metres on a North-Westerly aspect. If you look close you can make out the lighter shade of the new windslab and the darker shade of the older snow which sported a thin breakable crust.
