Cold and dry

13th February 2025

It has been a very settled period of weather. Conditions have been cold and dry with generally South-Easterly winds for a week.

Little change in the weather means little change in the snowpack. Localised instabilities in old windslab are persisting and some very isolated and shallow accumulations of fresh unstable windslab formed from snow redistributed by the wind were noted. In most locations however, the snowpack stability is good.

Photos below from Aonach Mor.

Looking South between Aonach Mor and Carn Mor Dearg to the Mamores.

Higher summits in the cloud (Carn Mor Dearg with Ben Nevis behind).

The Grey Corries.

Coire Dubh. The windslab round the corrie rim has been there for more than a week. There is some evidence of wind erosion but actually very little change in the amount of snow present.

Looking North in Coire an Lochan.

Looking down Easy Gully.

Cornices aren’t too big a problem at the moment but there are still some!

Paths and watercourses very icy in places. While the higher summits were in cloud today it was a nice sunny day at lower elevations in Lochaber.

Temperatures at 1200 metres on Aonach Mor for the last 5 days. Well below freezing throughout. Last night was the coldest getting down to -7.1 degrees Celsius.
