Eye spy… small amounts of snow.

16th January 2025

Spring weather is here in the Lochaber area, bringing a very pleasant day for exploring the hills. Unfortunately the snowpack has greatly diminished in the mild temperatures.

Currently there is insufficient snow for an avalanche hazard and no avalanche reports will be published until conditions change. The remaining snow is generally soft and slowly melting.

The snow cover is restricted to localised snow patches and generally limited to deep gullies, scarp slopes and crag aprons above 1000m on mainly North-East to East aspects.

(Above) Other areas of Lochaber are back to bare ground on most aspects. Looking towards the South side of Ben Nevis from Steall meadows in Glen Nevis. Winter seems to be on pause just now.

Thank you for all daily reports and pictures, they are always very helpful to understand ground conditions and plan accordingly, even when disappointingly snow-free! Seems like will stay this way for some days yet, so I’m embracing the thought that any days on the hills are usually better than days at work, even without the winter wonderland most of us reading your blog are wishing for!
