Winter returns

22nd March 2024

Heavy snow showers combined with gale force West-South-West winds and a freezing level around 750 metres today made it feel like winter again today. Fresh snow accumulations were fairly limited while I was out this morning but the showers continued through the afternoon and are forecast to be more frequent through tonight and tomorrow. Unstable windslab will be continuing to accumulate. See the avalanche report for more details.

Despite the wintery weather the ptarmigan are starting to change to their summer plumage and were well camouflaged in today’s conditions.

Photos from Aonach Mor below.

Looking up into Coire Dubh during a clearer moment. The top of Braveheart chair is on the left.

The remaining old cornice on Aonach an Nid. This was refreezing today but fresh cornice development will happen here through the rest of today and tomorrow.

The ptarmigan have started the change to their summer colours with the male on the right a bit ahead of the female.

Another pair of well camouflaged Ptarmigan.
