Winter is Back

22nd February 2024

Winter made a return to the hills pf Lochaber today (which was good). There were some heavy snow showers, but also some brief sunny spells. It was cold with summit temperatures around minus five degrees Celsius. As expected the old snowpack that got soaked in the mild and wet conditions earlier in the week is now really hard and icy. In terms of the climbing I could not really see what routes survived the thaw. There were areas of fresh windslab forming through the day. Although unstable, these were not particularly extensive.  However, these are expected to continue forming overnight and through tomorrow.

Looking over to the Carn Mor Dearg area.

Coire an Lochan.

Climbers gearing up in the shelter of the summit hut during a snow shower.

There are some cornices about. This cornice is not all from the new snow, there was something of a cornice that survived last week’s thaw which has been added

On the way back down the hill the sun briefly came out. There was plenty of drifting snow visible during the day.
