Poor visibility and rapid temperature rises

20th December 2023

There was rain throughout the day, which was above the summits by mid morning. The freezing level went well above the summits by late morning and the wind was very strong to gale force Westerly throughout the day.

Temperature trend Aonach Mor.

Temperature trend Aonach Mor, note the rapid rise in temperature during the morning.

Tomorrow, after heavy rain overnight, there will be showers throughout the day. During the morning the temperature will drop and snow will fall to lower levels, down to around 500 metres by the end of the day. Winds will be storm force West-North-Westerly, with significant strength even to lower levels. With such strong winds forecast, in general, it is not expected that much snow will actually settle on the mountains.

Although it is forecast to be colder on the summits over the next 24 hours, it will then remain unsettled, with further temperature cycles expected.
