Cornices

13th March 2022

Today was a damp windy day at most elevations with some fresh snow above 1100 metres. Below this thaw conditions prevail with rock and icefall hazards. Cornices exist above many of the climbs in Lochaber just now, particularly on Ben Nevis. There were 2 reports of cornice collapse in yesterdays milder temperatures. In any milder spells cornice collapse will be a hazard.

Creag Coire na Ciste with some large cornices above many of the routes.

Cornices above Number 3 Gully Buttress

Orion face to Observatory Buttress. This was the best photo I managed to take but in a brief clearing it was possible to see some cornices around the top of Point Five Gully.
