Melt, freeze, then fresh snow

13th December 2021

Warm conditions last night when the temperature at 1200 metres rose to 4 degrees C were followed by colder conditions today. This has helped to further consolidate the existing snowpack. Localised areas of fresh, moderately bonded, windslab were deposited today mainly on North to East aspects above 900 metres that were sheltered from the strong winds.

The temperatures should be the other way around tomorrow with the colder conditions persisting overnight followed by rising temperatures during the day.

An Eastern aspect on Carn Mor Dearg showing most fresh snow round the corrie rims.

The Goose on Aonach Mor showing both old and new snow on North and North-East aspects with North-West aspect on the left more scoured.

Temperature data from 1200m on Aonach Mor showing the warm and thawing conditions last night and the colder temperatures today.

Evidence of the very strong winds last night.
