Aonach Mor Avalanche Day Number Three.

It was a day of snow showers and occasionally sunny spells. It was also a very quiet day on the hill, I didn’t see any climbers today. Perhaps my dire predictions on yesterday’s blog put people off. However, what I predicted did occur, there were fresh avalanches. Peering into Coire an Lochan I could make out at least four tongues of avalanche debris including one below Easy Gully. With snow showers, a South-West wind and temperatures remaining cool, more of the same is expected tomorrow.
Another closer shot of yesterday’s avalanche below the Web taken yesterday (thanks to Clive Hebblethwaite for the photo). There was not sign of this avalanche today, it had all filled in. However, there were plenty more soft slab avalanches in that area.
Shooting cracks. An image that we use a lot on the SAIS blog, but I this case it had propagated over a meter. IN the current conditions failures clearly have the propensity to propagate.
In a brief clear spell. Lots of spindrift blowing off the plateau with weak cornices building.
Easy Gully. A shallow crown wall from a recent avalanche can be seen running diagonally up and right. Although not visible in the picture this crown wall continued most of the way round the top of the gully.
Looking into Coire an Lochan. Debris from at least four recent soft slab avalanches can be seen.
