A snow showery day.

29th January 2018

After a very mild and wet night last night, the weather as  a lot colder with snow showers through the day. The surface of the snowpack has refrozen to give a hard and icy crust. Through the day some areas of windslab were being on lee aspects at higher levels. However, these did not tend to be particularly extensive or deep.

I imagine that climbing conditions should be improving in the colder conditions with (hopefully) plenty of ice forming on the higher crags.  The snow which is forecast over the next few days should improve the skiing conditions.

The cornice at the top of Easy Gully today. Compare with the picture from yesterday. The cornices looks to be a bit of a different shape. I suspect that a few cornices will have collapsed in the mild conditions yesterday evening, and in a couple of places I could just about make out some blocks of cornice debris through gloom.

A hard icy snowpack with a few drifts for fresh snow from today’s snow showers.

A brief clearing after a snow shower. Spindrift can be seen blowing off the ridge.
