Cold and sunny

It was cold and sunny with light winds this morning – great conditions for photos! In the afternoon the wind picked up from the South and there was a layer of high cloud.
The older snowpack has frozen and become firm. Localised areas of shallow windslab were present mainly on South and South-East aspects with much of it lying on bare ground.
Changeable and at times stormy weather to come in the next few days.

A lot of cornices collapsed on Tuesday and Wednesday but there are still some big overhanging cornices remaining. This one is above Coire an Lochan.

The last two photos are mountains just outside the SAIS Lochaber forecast area. Let us know in the comments if you think that the area should be expanded to include these or other mountains.

Great to still see winter conditions at this time of year . As you pointed out in earlier blogs you have to go back to 2014 for similar conditions and snow depth .

Ive always been surprised that these areas haven’t been in your patch, so yes, I think it would be good to include them. They are very popular in the winter.

I agree that it would make sense to include the Mamores which sit between the Lochaber and Glencoe forecast areas. Whether to expand the area to the North-East (or in other directions) is more questionable to me. Increasing the size too much would reduce the focus on the core Lochaber area.

I think regarding expanding the forecast area, the more information is out there the better.
Apprieciate the work and photos. I think the SAIS is a fantastic service to mountaineers of all abilities.

Thanks Leo. The possible slight downside to expanding the forecast area would be slightly less focus on the Ben Nevis area which I think is the most popular.
