Very firm snowpack

3rd March 2026

It was a nice dry day with some thin high cloud. After a cold night the freezing level rose to around 1000 metres. The snowpack was very firm everywhere and didn’t soften noticeably even at lower elevations.

Nice stable conditions avalanche wise.

Photos below from the Grey Corries at the Eastern end of the Lochaber forecast area.

Snow in the woods at 600 metres. There’s more snow here than anywhere else in the area at this height. This reminded me of a recent news story about Jahama Highland estates (who own the majority of the land in the Lochaber forecast area) planning a large woodland regeneration project. Tree skiing in 30 years time anyone?

Aonach Beag and Aonach Mor.

Thanks to the Creag Meagaidh forecaster for the photo below looking at the area from the East.

Saw a big avalanche on the Grey Corries in May 2008, just at the headwall in the 2nd photo.

Thanks for the photos Iain. That slope doesn’t avalanche frequently. I don’t think I’ve seen a full depth avalanche there before.
