Mild with Drizzle

24th February 2026

It was a mild day with some drizzle from time to time. The snowpack is wet and thawing at all levels. Below 1000 metres things tend to be well consolidated. Above 1000 metres, and particularly high in the gullies on the likes of Aonach Mor and Ben Nevis it is not yet well consolidated. There are some pretty large cornices, and these remain prone to collapse in the mild and wet conditions.

Looking up through the ski area. Snow cover is decreasing (compare for example to the photo on the blog yesterday). However, what does remain would have provided some reasonable skiing.

In some places the stream is starting to show through.

The view over to Carn Dearg Beag, with the higher peaks of Carn Dearg Meadhonach and Carn Mor Dearg up in the mist on the left. Hard to see due to the cloud but there was debris from a couple of decent sized avalanches in the bowl on the left.

Poor visibility on the top of Aonach Mor, but enough to see there were some large cornices remaining. These will be prone to collapse in the continuing mild and wet conditions.
