A gradual thaw

8th February 2026

Today was warmer than recent days with a gradual thaw at most elevations. The freezing level was around 1200 metres with some wet snow on the highest summits. Despite the thaw there is still a significant amount of rime above around 1000 metres, this includes on a lot on the cornices on the East face as seen in the photos below.

Similar conditions are forecast for tomorrow with some light precipitation which will fall as snow above around 1000 metres with moderate South-Easterly winds.

Cornices round the top of of North side Easy Gully Aoanch Mor. While the cornices are not as large as they often are the significant riming adds to the cornice issue, this has formed in the recent strong South-Easterly winds.  The same conditions are present along the whole of the East face of Aonach Mor.

The South side of Easy Gully, Aonach Mor with similar cornice issues and riming.

Further South on the East face of Aonach Mor, similar rimed cornice issues.

The West face of Aonach Mor equally rimed, the snow here is relatively shallow given the long period of South-Easterly winds we have had. The nature of the terrain means there are less cornice issues here.

As much of Carn Mor Dearg as was visible today.
