Little change

3rd January 2026

There has only been a little fresh snow since yesterday and there was limited drifting where I was on Aonach Mor today, meaning little change in the snowpack. Only a few further snow showers are forecast on similar strength North-Westerly winds tomorrow therefore little change is expected. While the windslab deposits may become a little deeper the situation where we have deep deposits of unstable windslab, but these are very localised and effect specific locations will continue. Cold temperatures will maintain instabilites that do exist, with the top of steep slopes and particularly gullies with an East to South-West aspect most affected. Cross loading and drifting mean there may also be unstable deposits in North-East facing gullies, particularly high on Ben Nevis.

Looking along the coire rim of Coire Dubh, Aonach Mor. This is a South-East aspect at 1100 metres.

The South-East side of Easy gully with windslab and cornices. The other side of the the gully has less snow. This is more snow than any where else on Aonoach Mor, although a lot of varying sized fragile cornices do exist.

The North-East facing slopes of easy gully. If you look closely you can see where the windslab ends and becomes rocky with firm snow. Although this is very firm snow with rocks and very serious.

Looking down toward the twins area, Aonach Mor, lots of rock visible.

Most rocks have a significant coating of rime.

At lower levels there has been very little if any drifting. Notice no drifts have formed on either side of the snow fence. These fences catch snow very well and if there was any at this heightdrifting a drift would be noticeable here.
