Colder again

7th January 2026

After a milder day yesterday the freezing level dropped today leaving a melt freeze crust below 800 metres. This is a breakable crust on foot and on snow shoes and I expect would be the same on skis. I went for the snow shoe option above 650 metres which did reduce how far into the soft snow I sank. They were also good in the soft windslab at higher elevations.

Above 800 metres there has been quite a lot of drifting and windslab is present on many aspects, particularly above 1000 metres.

There was quite a lot of cloud on the summits today but also some glimpses of sun.

What could be seen of Carn Mor Dearg and Ben Nevis from the North.

Looking North to the Lochaber area from Glencoe. Ben Nevis and Carn Mor Dearg are the two distant mountains catching a bit of sun.

Beinn Bhan catching some sun across the Great Glen.

Looking West from Aonach Mor along Loch Eil.

Yesterdays South-Westerly winds resulted in significant snow accumulation in the lee of snow fences. This was at just 740 metres with more drifting higher up.

Snowshoes were a good choice today.
