The end of the thaw?

23rd December 2025

Today was clearer than expected giving me a chance to get a good look at how much snow is left on the Northern part of Ben Nevis which was clear. There was thick cloud in Coire Leis all morning with thinner cloud extending into Observatory Gully much of the time.

It was dry (bar a few spots of rain) with light winds and the freezing level was above the summits. The snowpack remains wet and was slowly thawing. Dry and settled conditions with lower temperatures are expected over the next few days so little change is expected to the snow distribution although it is expected to become firm and frozen.

The sun catching the top of Number 5 Gully with cornices visible. While these are prone to collapse today, lower temperatures from tomorrow onwards should reduce this risk.

The Castle area – not much snow on this lower part of Ben Nevis.

Cloud in Coire Leis. This remained there all morning while cloud cleared from the rest of Ben Nevis.
