Graupel Showers

18th December 2025

There were some showers overnight and through the day. However, there was not as much much fresh snow as the forecast had suggested (and had been hoped for). The freezing level rose to 1200 metres by later afternoon, but is forecast to drop to around 800 metres overnight. Slow going but things are feeling more wintry in the higher coires.

Graupel, also know as soft hail. It is formed when snowflakes get covered in rime on their journey down to earth, and is often in cool showery conditions such as we had last night. There was a fair bit of fresh graupel in today’s snowpack.

The view over to Carn Dearg and Ben Nevis behind as another snow shower approaches.

The top of Coire an Lochan. The top of the crags in some locations holds little snow.

Yesterdays crown wall in Easy Gully. Still not a great photo, but a bit easier to see than the photos yesterday.

Looking South along the top of the Coire. The tops of gullies tends to have caught the snow quite well.
