Winter has arrived

Welcome to the first Lochaber blog for winter 25/26. And winter has arrived! Above 900m on all aspects a thin covering of snow is present. Sadly, on the most part it does not hold the weight of a person, so progress was slow, post holing up the North West flank of Aonach Mor. The forecast promised a stellar blue sky day with lots of sunshine, but unfortunately Aonach Mor held it’s summit cloud most of the day limiting the opportunity for photographs. The summit temperature was around -5 degrees with a North-Easterly wind delivering severe windchill.
Lots of breakable crust today. A thin/hard crust not quite holding the weight of a person. The crust is overlying softer snow, but generally stability is good. The forecast for tomorrow is very similar to today, so little change is expected.
More snow is present on North to East aspects above 1000m. Photo below looking along the Aonach an Nid showing the East facing corrie rim of Aonach Mor.
Looking into the top of Easy Gully, very small cornices are present.

Visibility on Ben Nevis was significantly better than on it’s neighbour Aonach Mor. Below looking up into Coire na Ciste.
