Ben Nevis

1st April 2025

Dry sunny conditions gave a chance to have a look at the snow remaining on Ben Nevis. There is very little for the time of year with most snow remaining in North to East facing gullies and around coire rims above 1100 metres. There is very snow elsewhere, with many of the lower Lochaber hills close to snow free. The freezing level has been above the summits for nearly 48 hours and the snowpack is very wet particularly where in the sun. With little change in the weather the thaw will continue with the hazards that thaw conditions bring. There are some small cornices pictured below and any that remain will be prone to collapse. Rock fall will also remain a hazard particularly in gullies.

Small sections of cornice at the top of number 5 gully, these are prone to collapse in the warm temperatures and sunshine.

The snow patches on the West side of Aonach Mor are hard to spot. This is more typical of the cover in Lochaber as a whole.
