Patchy spring snowpack

19th March 2025

It has been very settled weather this week with light winds and clear skies leading to overnight frosts and a firm snowpack. During the day the sun has caused quite a lot of thawing and softening particularly on aspects directly exposed to it but snow on high shady Northerly aspects has remained firm.

I headed up onto Sgurr Chionnich Beag today. Only a few isolated snow patches there but it does give good views of the snowier East side of the Aonachs and North side of the Mamores as well as the less snowy South sides of Aonach Beag and Ben Nevis.

The East side of Aonach Beag and Aonach Mor.

The South side of Aonach Beag and Sgurr a’ Bhuic.

The Mamores. The 2 snowier summits are Binnein Mor (left) and Sgurr a’ Mhaim (right).

The South-East side of Ben Nevis and the Carn Mor Dearg Arete.

Sgurr Chionnich Beag and Mor.

Interesting patterns on ice formed in the cold overnight conditions.

Primrose in Glen Nevis, a good sign of spring.
