Ben Nevis gullies

21st March 2025

As forecast it got much warmer today with the freezing level well above the summits overnight and during the day. There were a couple of rock and ice fall events heard in the thawing conditions. Any rime and superficial snow cover that had been on steep shady aspects has now melted leaving patchy snow and ice. It was a bit hazy and the summits were mainly cloud free so it was a good chance to see what snow and ice remains in the gullies and corries on Ben Nevis.

Pictures of the main gullies that I could see from left to right and then a few more general photos.

Zero Gully

Point 5 Gully

Gardyloo Gully

The narrow gully at the top of the picture is Tower Gully with the wider gully lower down being Observatory Gully.

Garadh Gully

Number 2 Gully

Number 3 Gully

Number 5 Gully

The Castle Gullies

Tower Ridge

Corrie na Ciste

Snow cover in the Lochaber area on the 19th March. The whitest bit is the Aonach Mor summit plateau, just left of centre. There was only a thin covering of snow here which will thaw in the mild conditions today and tomorrow which will leave snow mainly in high North to East facing corries and gullies.

Many thanks for the blogs and forecasts to all the folks in SAIS. Sad to see such a lack of snow and ice on Ben Nevis at this time of year.

Thanks Roy. I’m sure it’s the least snow I’ve seen at this time of year.
