Ben Nevis

28th December 2024

Unfortunately there wasn’t much to see on Ben Nevis today. Rain continued through most of the day and the forecast dry spell didn’t arrive till late afternoon, the freezing level also remained higher than expected. The thaw of the remaining snow continues and rivers levels were high, the Alt a Mhuilinn would have been problematic to cross. The cloud level was low and the highest gullies on Ben Nevis, which is where the remaining snow will be, stayed hidden today. The areas shown in the photos have only patches. Thaw conditions continue through most of tomorrow with the possibility of wet snow on the very highest summits. Towards the end of the afternoon the freezing level is forecast to fall with precipitation turning to snow above 1000 metres.

Observatory gully area, Ben Nevis

As much of Coire na Ciste as was visible today. Most notable feature is the amount of water flowing out of the coire.

Castle gully area, Ben Nevis with only patches remaining.

The All a Mhuilinn would have been problematic to cross.
