An improving day

30th December 2024

After a warm, wet and windy start everything improved quickly to give a pleasant day although the cloud did tend to cover the mountains most of the time. There was quite a bit of flooding after very heavy overnight rain.

Further thawing of the patchy snowpack overnight and this morning although the surface would start to refreeze in the afternoon as the temperature dropped. It’s a rapidly changing picture in the next 24 hours with a short period of heavy snow this evening followed by some heavy rain overnight and then a little further snow tomorrow. From New Year’s day onwards quite a prolonged period of cold conditions are forecast.

Thanks to Graham for this photo of Ben Nevis during a brief clearer period.

This was as clear as it got on Aonach Mor.

Flooding around the River Lochy.

Flooding in the Ben Nevis visitor centre car park.

Wind speeds at 1130 metres on Aonach Mor. I was pleased about the significant drop in wind speeds this morning.

Temperature at 1200 metres on Aonach Mor for the last 5 days. Mostly very mild with a significant temperature drop today. There’s another mild period tonight before cold conditions arrive for the rest of the week.
