Graupel showers

29th February 2024

It was a day of heavy showers and occasional sunshine. It was also very windy. Unsurprisingly, the older snowpack which got a soaking yesterday, is now very hard and icy at higher levels. There were area of water ice on be plateau. There was lots of graupel within the showers, which felt very “exfoliating” on any exposed skin during the heavy showers.

A brief spell of sunshine illuminating the blowing snow.

Looking over to Carn Mor Dearg.

Conditions at 1200 metres. Drifting snow, over an icy summit plateau.

The cornice above Right Twin, The droopy bit discussed in yesterday’s blog has gone.

There was lots of graupel mixed in with the snow that was falling. Graupel is just rimed up snowflake, and they seem common when conditions are quite showery.
