A Soggy Day.

15th February 2024

Well the nice cold winter condition we have been having in Lochaber have come to an end. Today was mild and damp with poor visibility. I could however, see some evidence of recent instability on Aonach Mor. There looked to be a small new crown wall in East Gully, and I could see a number of cornices that looked they they were shortly going to collapse. I also heard reports of avalanche activity on Ben Nevis (Number 5 gully, and in the back of Coire an Ciste).  Unfortunately looking mild for the next few days.

Fort William is down there somewhere. It was a misty murky day in Lochaber today.

The top of of the East face of Aonach Mor. There were one or two climbers out and about.

With the ground still being frozen, on flat terrain rainwater and snowmelt has nowhere to go, so pools in big areas of slush form.

Evidence of cornice collapse. I suspect there would have been a fair number of cornices collapsed overnight and this morning in the mild conditions.

Other cornices just waiting to go like this one above Right Twin.
