Normal conditions have returned

13th January 2024

After a long period of settled weather with temperature inversions and clear blue skies it was a return to more normal conditions today with a layer of cloud sitting at around 1100 metres. A melt/freeze cycle last night has left an icy surface to the snowpack with only a slight softening at lower elevations. Getting colder tomorrow so the snowpack will be very firm at all altitudes.

Photos below showing conditions today.

The higher peaks were generally in the cloud today – Aonach Mor here.

The summits were unusually warm yesterday in a warm inversion layer with much colder air below. Notice the very sudden drop in temperature and rise in humidity between 12:00 and 13:00 as the colder air mass returned.
